2024 Solo Eastern Montana Deer Hunt: Ten Days in God’s Country
When I think of Eastern Montana , I think of “God’s country” wide open skies, sneakily rugged terrain, and some of the finest mule deer populations in the West. In November 2024, I spent ten days on a solo hunt chasing mature mule deer bucks during the peak of the rut.
From the first day, it was clear this would be a hunt to remember. I saw hundreds of deer, dozens of bucks, and every day offered new adventures. There’s something special about being solo in this country; it sharpens your senses, deepens your focus, and connects you to what you love, in a breathtaking environment.
After days of glassing bucks and traversing country, the hunt culminated in harvesting a quality buck. This was the culmination of e-scouting & planning, patience, and respect for the land and the wildlife that inhabits these spaces. Crisp November mornings, the solitude of the open plains, and the connection to the animals that roam this incredible state.
My wonderful wife was able to join me for the last 2 days of the hunt to fill her tag but we did not have success with that short window. We had limited time and sometimes that how it goes... Eastern Montana in November is a special place, and this hunt was a reminder that the best experiences often come when you embrace the moment, be patient and enjoy each day.
