2024 Washington State General Season: A Hunt of Passion and Presence
There’s something about the Cascade Mountain Range in October that commands your full attention, every sound, every shadow, every breeze carries a story. For the 2024 Washington State General Season, I set out with a clear goal: to immerse myself fully in the hunt, to be present, and to honor the animals I pursue.
The first week of my hunt was a solo backpacking adventure into the high country. Alone, miles from roads and cell service, I experienced the raw intensity of the wilderness. It’s in those quiet, often challenging moments that you truly connect to the land and the animals you hunt. Not to mention, this is where you learn so much about yourself. On my final day of this solo stretch, that connection culminated in harvesting a magnificent chocolate black bear—a rewarding moment that reminded me why I embrace this lifestyle. I played chess with an awesome mountain buck all week but never could seal the deal, harvesting this bear in the moment was special.
Two days later, my wife joined me for the next phase of the hunt. Together, we explored the rugged terrain, eyes peeled for mule deer, the true highlight of my season. Mountain mule deer hold a special place in my heart, and we had multiple encounters with incredible bucks. Though we didn’t seal the deal, each sighting reinforced the respect and admiration I have for these elusive animals. That's the thing about the mountains: sometimes success isn't measured by tags filled, but in the experience itself.

The hunt was a rollercoaster, rain, snow, wind, clear skies, moments of frustration, and moments of appreciation. Every observation, and every challenge reminded me why I hunt: for the connection to nature, the challenge, and the gratitude that comes with truly being present in the wild. While this trip left me hungry for future success on this mountain, it also left me with memories and lessons that only a true backcountry hunt can provide.
For me, hunting isn’t just about the harvest, it’s about being part of a larger story, one of passion, presence, and conservation. Every season teaches us something new, and the 2024 Washington State hunt was no exception, forever engrained in my memories.
